Who is the titular father of How I Met Your Father? is one step closer to being answered.
The two-part Season 2 finale of Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger’s How I Met Your Mother sequel series premiered on Hulu on July 11, and in addition to a long-awaited reconciliation, a long-awaited breakup, and a mid-hurricane makeout session, we’re fairly certain that How I Met Your Father eliminated a major candidate for the paternity of Sophie’s child.
Hopefully, Sophie (Hilary Duff), Valentina (Francia Raisa), Jesse (Chris Lowell), Sid (Suraj Sharma), Ellen (Tien Tran), and Charlie’s (Tom Ainsley) friendships and love stories will continue to develop on our television screens. But is Season 3 of How I Met Your Father coming to Hulu?
Want to know whether How I Met Your Father has been renewed or canceled? And what Season 3 could possibly entail? Here is everything we know about the sequel series to How I Met Your Mother.
How I Met Your Father: Renewal Status for Season 3: Renewed or Cancelled?
As of the Season 2 finale of How I Met Your Father (11 July), Hulu had not yet renewed or canceled the series. We’ve sought out to a representative for the series and will update this article when we hear back, but fans shouldn’t give up hope just because we haven’t heard anything yet.
The renewal of How I Met Your Father for a second season midway through the first season was a positive sign. Moreover, while Season 1 consisted of 10 episodes, Season 2’s massive 20-episode order was a positive sign for the series.
The previous hit program, How I Met Your Mother, ran for nine seasons. And while it’s unusual for shows to last that long in the era of streaming, it’s clear that How I Met Your Father still has material for additional episodes, since we still don’t know who the titular father is!
It seems unlikely that Hulu would cancel a show with such a charming cast and a unique nostalgia factor before answering its central question, but we’ve been burned too many times this year by unexpectedly canceled shows in 2023, so fans of How I Met Your Father should keep their fingers crossed just in case.
When Would the Third Season of How I Met Your Father Premiere?
Season 1 of How I Met Your Father debuted in January 2022 and concluded in March 2022, while Season 2 aired from January 2023 to July 2023, with a brief break in the midst of the 20-episode run.
According to the show’s regular release schedule, new episodes of How I Met Your Father could premiere as early as January 2024. While we wait for additional information, let’s contemplate what Season 3 might entail.
How Did I Met Your Father Season 2 Ending Explanation: What Will Season 3 Be About?
If you’re looking for a detailed recap of How I Met Your Father’s Season 2 finale, check out our article that delves into Season 2, Episode 20 “Okay Fine, It’s A Hurricane.” However, if you’re willing to consider ahead, here’s what Season 3 could look like.
Season 2 concluded with four significant relationship developments: Sophie and Jesse reconciled and shared an unforgettable kiss during a tempest that none of us should attempt at home.
After Hannah embraced another man and Sid had a brief emotional affair with another woman, it is highly likely that Sid and Hannah broke up, called off their engagement, or at the very least are taking a break. And we captured Val kissing DREW in Pemberton’s supply closet.
Before you become overly concerned about their relationship — which adult Sophie (Kim Cattrall) characterized as “a disaster” — know that before the episode concludes, we receive photographic evidence that Valentina and Charlie eventually reunite and have a child named Alex.
A prospective third season of How I Met Your Father would follow the friendships, daily dramas, and romantic pursuits of the group of friends.
We’d like to see Jesse and Sophie give their relationship another (more successful) try, Sid recover from his Season 2 finale heartbreak, Val and Drew do, umm, whatever they’re about to do, and Val and Charlie find their way back to each other.
Oh, and in addition to (obviously) more How I Met Your Mother cameos, we expect to see more personal Ellen and Charlie plotlines! Ellen and Charlie dominate!
The unanswered question of who fathered Sophie’s son will obviously remain a major mystery in Season 3, but if ratings are strong and Hulu believes How I Met Your Father has the staying power of How I Met Your Mother (or even half the staying power), that storyline will likely be extended.
How I Met Your Father’s first two seasons are presently available on Hulu.
